Heatstroke Prevention

With the warm weather in full effect, our veterinary team at Peel Animal Hospital, located in Brampton Ontario, wants to help you keep your precious pet safe from heatstroke. This dangerous, life-threatening condition is an unfortunate reality in the warmer seasons. It happens when a pet's body temperature rises to a dangerous level and is often accompanied by dehydration. The following are some helpful tips to prevent heatstroke and keep your pet cool on hot days. If you are looking for the best veterinarian near you, we are here to help.

Heatstroke prevention

1. Never Leave Your Pet in the Car

Not even for a short time. Temperatures can rise rapidly in an enclosed space so be sure to take your dog with you at outside or at least keep the air conditioning on when your pet is inside.

2. Watch the Humidity Levels

Even when it's not terribly hot outside, high humidity can inhibit a pet's ability to cool himself. This can lead to dehydration which quickly leads to heatstroke.

3. Limit Outdoor Time on Hot Days

While it's great for your pet to get fresh air and exercise daily, on extreme heat days, it could be more harmful than helpful. Consider going for a shorter walk early in the morning or waiting until the sun goes down in the evening.

4. Stay Away from Asphalt

Asphalt, also known as blacktop, gets extremely hot in warm weather and can burn your pets’ paws.

5. Provide Shade

If you must be outside, ensure your pet has access to shade; under a tree, umbrella, or even under a table.

6. Have Fresh Water for Your Pet

Having a regular bowl of water in the kitchen might not be enough for your pet on hot days. It may be a good idea to take water along on walks, car trips, or trips to the dog park.

7. Let Your Pets Relax

Like humans, pets may just want to flop somewhere cool and comfy on a hot day.
