TPLO Surgery

TPLO Surgery from Our Veterinarian Near You in Brampton, ON

Have you been looking for a veterinarian near you for help with your dog's joint issues? At Peel Animal Hospital in Brampton, Ontario, we offer TPLO surgery for your canine. TPLO (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy) is done to treat dogs that have cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) injuries. The surgery is highly effective and dogs who undergo this procedure are usually able to regain mobility and enjoy a reduction or elimination of pain in the affected joint.

TPLO Surgery

To better understand the area, the CCL is akin to the ACL in humans. When it tears, it is just as excruciating and debilitating in your dog as it is in humans. Visit our vet at Peel Animal Hospital for help, since it can cause terrible discomfort, lameness, and arthritis if left untreated.

What Is Involved with TPLO Surgery

During the surgery, our vet will reshape the shin bone. This alters the angle of the knee joint, and reduces pressure and stabilizes the joint. It also eliminates the need for the CCL to bear all the weight. During the procedure, our pet surgeon near you at Peel Animal Hospital cuts the tibial plateau and rotates it into a more level position. A metal plate is then attached to secure the bone while it heals. This change in the angle allows your dog’s knee to function normally without the torn ligament, reducing pain and allowing for a quicker return to normal activities.

Recovery and Rehabilitation

There is no easy way to say it; recovery from TPLO surgery is not just a hop, skip and a jump after being discharged from the hospital. In fact, your dog will not be jumping or running for quite some time, since the recovery time is long. However, once that period is over, your dog will be able to do all the favorite activities that it did before the joint became problematic. A long period of rest and recovery must come first, though.

During this time, you should prepare soft bedding in an area of the home where your furry best friend can get peace and rest. It takes time for the bone to heal, and the less activity and movement, the better, at least for the time being. Most dogs begin to show a little improvement within a week or two of the surgery, with full recovery taking up to 12 weeks. We will schedule follow-up visits to monitor healing and ensure the joint is recovering as expected!
